Garden Planted

Cancer Garden Ribbon Cutting

Boy scout Jaime Martinez of Scout Troop 171 conducted his Eagle Scout service project by beautifying the grounds outside the windows of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Passavant in the Baierl Pavilion. Through a project spanning 18 months, Jaime raised the funds necessary to reconstruct the garden with the help of hundreds of community supporters and donors. At a ribbon cutting ceremony held on June 5, 2017, community members joined us to celebrate the success of the project. Seven trees in the garden were dedicated.

The project builds on Tibby’s Healing Garden, planted in 2012. The original garden was made possible by a gift from generous donors who wanted to honor the life of a friend.

Dedication opportunities for trees and birdhouse are still available. Contact the Foundation for more information. Watch the one-minute video made by this incredible scout: Eagle Scout Cancer Center Garden

Facility Improvements

Honoring Joseph Michael Chubbuck

During its history, the Foundation has helped to fund many hospital projects, contributing more than $122 million. Notably, the Foundation contributed $65 million towards the construction of a seven-floor 188,000 square foot Pavilion on Passavant's 134-acre campus in McCandless. The Foundation contributed $16.4 million to build a conference center and a 250-seat theater on the McCandless campus known as the Passavant Hospital Foundation Conference Center & Legacy Theatre.

In 2015 the Foundation funded $575,000 in renovations to the inpatient floor where most of the patients are receiving cancer treatment. A generous donation from the Chubbuck family of Rome NY allowed a family respite alcove to be dedicated at the end of the hall on that floor.

Department Grants

The Foundation makes grants to hospital departments for technology, equipment and programs which improve patient care, as suggested by front-line staff. This investment of funds is a collaborative effort with Passavant Hospital Auxiliary and the hospital itself, so that most worthwhile projects are funded.

Education and Outreach

The Foundation´s education and outreach programming is available to all in our community. The programs provide expert health information in layman´s terms; sessions are FREE and are open to all who wish to attend. Last year, the Foundation provided 87 free seminars reaching 7,047 attendees. Sessions were led by UPMC Passavant physicians, therapists and others who are experts in their fields. A special outreach initiative, in cooperation with the American Heart Association, is teaching CPR to middle-schoolers in all local school districts.

A Legacy of Caring

We've recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the hospital's move to the North Hills. In 1958, the "Bring It North" campaign was launched with tremendous community support, including fundraising events, door-to-door canvassing for donations and a petition signed by 16,000 citizens pledging to support the facility. The hospital opened its doors at its present location in 1964. To celebrate the efforts of many to bring a hospital to our community, Passavant Hospital Foundation is exhibiting a collection of photographs and memorabilia in the Main Lobby. The Foundation hosted a Golden Anniversary Gala to mark this milestone, at the Le Mont.
